Since the 90s the Italian performing arts sector has been characterized by juridical, social and economic changes. These trends have led to an increasing complexity and the performing arts organizations have undertaken a process of internal renewal. This process has been made possible by the recruitment and the training of human resources with managerial competencies. According to the resource based perspective human resources that are valuable, unique and difficult to imitate can provide the basis for firms’ competitive advantage. The relevance of human capital is higher in labour intensive sectors that include the performing arts. After the reforms of recent years, managerial jobs seem to be more critical than the artistic roles. This paper intends to investigate the state of the art in terms of managerial expertise and internal reorganization in the performing arts organizations. The methodology adopted is an empirical investigation conducted through the administration of a questionnaire.
