Creativity over the career

The variation of creativity over a career is one of the oldest topics in behavioral sciences. Yet, despite this intense scrutiny, we still lack a clear understanding of what we can do to keep creativity alive over the career. This issue is becoming increasingly pressing, as an aging workforce and the increased importance of creativity for organizations intensify the demand to limit or even avoid employees’ creative fluctuations. This chapter provides a multidisciplinary review of research on creativity over the career, with the twofold objective of providing a historical account of the field and of stimulating further inquiry. I classify extant research based on three different research questions: (a) how does creativity vary, (b) why do individuals differ in their creative trajectories, and (c) what fosters creativity at different career stages.
