The article analyzes first names and godparents given to abandoned children, comparing them with those given to legitimate children cared for by their parents. By studying many cases, it provides a picture of the Italian situation in the Late Medieval and Early Modern times, making it clear how the degree of discrimination for orphans and abandoned children increased over time, and suggesting that what happened at their baptism could later act as a social stigma or as an handicap throughout their lives.

Abstract
The article analyzes first names and godparents given to abandoned children, comparing them with those given to legitimate children cared for by their parents. By studying many cases, it provides a picture of the Italian situation in the Late Medieval and Early Modern times, making it clear how the degree of discrimination for orphans and abandoned children increased over time, and suggesting that what happened at their baptism could later act as a social stigma or as an handicap throughout their lives.File in questo prodotto:
