During the struggle for Italian independence clothing became a means to convey the patriotic ideals of the Risorgimento. This chapter takes as its starting point the advent of the costume all’italiana, also known as costume alla lombarda, a kind of civilian uniform worn by the protagonists of the Milanese Liberal revolutions, and it analyses the role of fashion in the process of unification and internationalisation of the Italian economy in the following decades.
