Abstract

Natural capital performs functions which are fundamental for our planet metabolic processes and for the well-being of present and future generations. A deep reconsideration and reshaping of the current growth model is needed, reducing the consumption of natural resources and the impact of human activities on them. Institutional policies, economic processes and social behaviors should be reframed and innovated. The pillars of a new sustainable model of growth are emerging through resources’ circularity, the use of renewables energies and efficiency in production and consumption processes.
In order to lead the transition towards sustainable development, a new governance of natural resources is needed at all institutional levels and involving both public and private actors.
