This chapter takes a notorious thirteenth-century artifact known as the Bern Diptych as a point of departure to explore three main issues: the relationship between materials and meaning in the late medieval west, with particular focus on rock crystal and jasper, and on their combination; the unique artisanal skills and trade networks that made it possible for Venice to become an international hub for the production and export of rock crystal artifacts; and the interactions between Venetian artistic knowledge and local 'water aesthetics'.
