This chapter reconstruct the processes of "divergence" in social customs regarding godparenthood triggered by the Schism of the East (1054) and by the sixteenth-century Reformation. The differences between Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant areas of Europe are analyzed, paying particular attention to differences in how strategies of selection of godparents could be developed to pursue social and economic objectives.

Abstract
