The global crisis that has affected developed countries since 2007 has also created a significant amount of strain on the budgets of public administrations, prompting them to look for solutions to contain their spending. In particular, solutions have become widespread in the majority of EU countries based on the centralization of technical and administrative activities at an upper level, marked by considerable diversity in terms of institutional and organizational structures. In the present chapter, the role of cooperative purchasing is presented and discussed. Paragraph 4.1 discussed the importance and magnitude of cooperative purchasing in public sector, presenting trends and figures. Paragraph 4.2 reviews the literature on cooperative purchasing in the public sector, suggesting an analysis framework that can illustrate the effects of centralization decisions on different elements. In the paragraph 4.3 this framework has been applied to discuss to case studies, one from United Kingdom and the other from Italy. In the final paragraph conclusions remarks are drawn
