Italian public organizations have been adopting a managerial approach to control over the last twenty years. Before the nineties, the only intra-organizational approach to control adopted in the public sector was the bureaucratic one. In the chapter, management control systems (MCSs) are presented as a package. According to this approach, MCSs include all the tools and systems managers use to ensure that the behaviors and decisions of their employees are consistent with the objectives and strategies of the organization.

Abstract
