A main assumption of the research in management is the existence of heterogeneity among firms. However, since its first adoption, the term heterogeneity has been applied in several fields with different meanings and conceptual definitions. This study adopts the co-citation technique to identify the relevant streams of research on Firm Heterogeneity. Results show the areas of research on the topic and a visual representation of the main articles dealing with heterogeneity. Our findings point out the existence of a multifaceted conceptual structure of heterogeneity and provide the interpretative dimensions by means of which the research on the topic has been carried out.

Abstract

A main assumption of the research in management is the existence of heterogeneity among firms. However, since its first adoption, the term heterogeneity has been applied in several fields with different meanings and conceptual definitions. This study adopts the co-citation technique to identify the relevant streams of research on Firm Heterogeneity. Results show the areas of research on the topic and a visual representation of the main articles dealing with heterogeneity. Our findings point out the existence of a multifaceted conceptual structure of heterogeneity and provide the interpretative dimensions by means of which the research on the topic has been carried out.
