The purpose of chapter is to verify the different extents to which Italian Regions have consciously used activity-based financing in order to affect provider behaviour within the general framework imposed by the central government. The chapter is structured as follows. The first section introduces the phenomenon. The second section provides some background on the Italian SSN. The third section reviews the relevant literature. The fourth section describes the paper’s methodology. Then the results are presented. Finally, some conclusions are drawn.
