The chapter provides an overview of civil service reforms in Italy over the 1990s and the 2000s. It emerges that reform events led to significant changes in the Italian system of public employment. It appears that fundamental components of the relationship between elected and tenured officials have gone through a process of redefinition. The chapter elaborates on such changes, and discussses also different positions in the academia with regard to potential "ways forward" in the modernisation of the Italian civil service.
