The chapter is the first comprehensive analysis of the history of FDIs in Italy, carried on on the basis of a new database built on original, primary and secondary sources. The dataset includes information about the largest joint stock companies under foreign control in the course of the whole twentieth century. On the basis of this, the article argues that foreign capitals are a neglected factor in explaining Italian convergence process.
