One of the most controversial issues in corporate social responsibility (CSR) today is making the business case for corporate virtue. Although a majority of the research finds a significant positive relationship between responsible behavior and financial performance, conflicting results do exist, even in cases involving the same sample of firms. Nevertheless, responsible practices beyond legal requirements are becoming an unprecedented global movement. Examples include growing numbers of social and ethical investment funds, more companies that voluntarily report their own social and environmental interactions with surrounding communities, and increasing numbers of firms that adopt codes of conduct and certified accountability systems. Is this trend supported by real benefits to the companies that adopt these practices?
