The article analyses the constitutional construction and progressive deconstruction of Japanese pacifism in light of the evolving Indo-Pacific order and the rise of the Takaichi government. Focusing on Article 9 of the 1947 Constitution, it examines the tension between the formal renunciation of war and the gradual expansion of Japan’s defense architecture through governmental reinterpretation and judicial deference. By reconstructing the historical origins of the pacifist clause, the development of the Self-Defense Forces, and the 2014 shift towards collective self-defense, the article argues that Japanese pacifism has been transformed from an absolute normative constraint into a flexible political doctrine. The current geopolitical context and the LDP’s strengthened parliamentary majority may further consolidate this evolution, raising broader questions about constitutional rigidity, executive dominance, and the future of constitutionalism in Japan.
