Widowhood is a dis rup tive life event, and in aging soci e ties, increased num bers of indi vid u als are poten tially exposed to it. Yet, we lack a com pre hen sive under stand ing of the demog ra phy of wid ow hood. Using total pop u la tion data with infor ma tion on mar i tal and cohabiting unions, dis crete-time event-his tory anal y sis, and inci dence-based mul ti state life tables, we ana lyze life time risk of wid ow hood, mean age at becom ing widowed, wid ow hood expec tancy, and var i a tion in years spent widowed, and also doc u ment gen der and edu ca tional dif fer ences in these met rics over the last three decades in Finland. Our results show that, over time, indi vid u als are less likely to expe ri ence wid ow hood, and when they do, it occurs at older ages. Compared with men, women have higher wid ow hood risk and wid ow hood expec tancy (dura tion) and a lower mean age at wid ow hood. Widowhood expec tancy for women declined from 8 to 6 years between 1988 and 2018, whereas for men it stag nated at around 2 years. Low-edu cated women faced more wid ow hood years than the highly edu cated, while the oppo site held for men. In show ing decreased risks, delayed onset, and shorter widow hood expec tancy, par tic u larly among women, our results sug gest that the cur rent older pop u la tion may expe ri ence reduced expo sure to the psy cho so cial and finan cial chal lenges of wid ow hood, with poten tially reduced care giv ing bur den on fam i lies and the state.
