The article discusses secessionist and independentist claims within the framework of decentralized States starting from the cases of Scotland, Greenland and Catalunya. The text argues that the process of European integration and establishment of the EMU have provoked cleavages between decision-making mechanisms affecting economic policy and the institutional structure of the Member States, that together with the centralization of powers in Executive bodies and the transformation of traditional international law have shaped the current understanding of self-determination for secessionist purposes.
