Vertical farming is an innovative solution for growing plants stacked on multiple layers in closed environments where light, nutrients, and temperature are constantly controlled. The main advantages of vertical farming are related to the efficient use of nutrients, the possibility of year-round production even in hostile environments, water savings, the possibility of eliminating herbicides and pesticides, and the reduction of risks related to climate, weather conditions, and workplace incidents. However, data on the economic sustainability of vertical farming projects are still insufficient. Despite widespread hype, profitability of investments in vertical farming is still to be demonstrated.
