After more than a decade of studies and technology developments, GNSS has been recently endorsed as one of the Game Changerinnovations to improve the competitivity of the ERTMS, the European Railways Train Management System. This paper reviews the main economical implications behind this unprecedented decision together with the benefits for using public telecom network and the challenges at system level.New capabilities and business models are making GNSS exciting for contributing to deploy ERTMS on local and regional lines in the coming years. The world’s most valuable GNSS localization technologies are leading the race to transform the future of ERTMS while introducing the concept of service provisioning to fully exploit the benefits.
