The Italian «HR world» has grown dramatically during the last three decades leading to the development of consolidated profession, a ourishing HR service industry and a lively presence of university research and education. The three pillars of such growth have been: a) the search for relevance in terms of the performance e ects of HR systems; b) the development of a HR technocracy and professional infrastructure; c) the organization of HR activities based on speci c sets of roles and structures. New technologies, revolving around industrial internet, wearables and big data are a ecting the «HR world» and more speci cally the competencies, role, and activities of the HR functions. They will determine profound changes in HRM logics and in the HR functions opening the profession to computer science and data analytics, transforming HR professionals into «social scientists», leading towards a more widespread approach to structured experimentation in the design and implementation of HR practices, and triggering a refocusing of HR towards social sustainability.
