In the eighties of the last century, both in management and economics a new awareness has grown and a new idea has become of critical relevance in literature: the concept of knowledge. Despite the centrality of the concept, we don’t have a shared understanding of the meaning of knowledge. In the work the effects of such a lack of consensus are examined. Focusing on the main perspectives coming from the cognitive sciences, cognitivism and connectionism, the impact on the concept of knowledge is shown and the implications on some questions are discussed: why do firms exist? how are rents generated? how does learning occur? how is knowledge managed? The answers are aimed at discussing the reasons why the emerging 'knowledge-based view' of the firm needs today the birth of a robùst theory, based on a strong consensus on the meaning of the concept of knowledge.

Abstract
In the eighties of the last century, both in management and economics a new awareness has grown and a new idea has become of critical relevance in literature: the concept of knowledge. Despite the centrality of the concept, we don’t have a shared understanding of the meaning of knowledge. In the work the effects of such a lack of consensus are examined. Focusing on the main perspectives coming from the cognitive sciences, cognitivism and connectionism, the impact on the concept of knowledge is shown and the implications on some questions are discussed: why do firms exist? how are rents generated? how does learning occur? how is knowledge managed? The answers are aimed at discussing the reasons why the emerging 'knowledge-based view' of the firm needs today the birth of a robùst theory, based on a strong consensus on the meaning of the concept of knowledge.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
