The technical efficiency of Italian water suppliers has been analyzed in this study, for the year 2005, by estimating a heteroskedastic stochastic production frontier. The aim of the paper is to identify “efficiency drivers”. The potential role of the multi-utility or mono-water structure, the quotation, the geographical location, the alternative models of ownership and management among public, private and pub-lic-private partnerships have all been analyzed. Empirical results show the signifi-cant influence of some ”efficiency drivers”, namely the integration between water and sewerage services and the multi-utility strategy. Ownership does not seem to have any impact on efficiency.

Abstract
The technical efficiency of Italian water suppliers has been analyzed in this study, for the year 2005, by estimating a heteroskedastic stochastic production frontier. The aim of the paper is to identify “efficiency drivers”. The potential role of the multi-utility or mono-water structure, the quotation, the geographical location, the alternative models of ownership and management among public, private and pub-lic-private partnerships have all been analyzed. Empirical results show the signifi-cant influence of some ”efficiency drivers”, namely the integration between water and sewerage services and the multi-utility strategy. Ownership does not seem to have any impact on efficiency.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
