The article deals with the political mechanisms of domestic employment policy change occurred over the past years in two European countries – Italy and France. Building on the Europeanization and welfare state change literature, it operationalizes the “misfit” hypothesis and it develops a ‘policy structure’ approach to the analysis of employment policy change. The main argument is that the relationship between Europeanization and policy change can be understood only if domestic governmental and social actors’ preferences are fully keep into account. More in general, the article shows how the nature of domestic preferences does explain differential patterns of Europeanization in similar conditions of policy “misfit”.
