Collaborating with industry constitutes discretionary behaviour for academics: this decision is shaped by the institutional environment and individual perceptions of the potential costs and benefits. Drawing on a large-scale survey of Italian researchers, we find that the decision to collaborate with industry is influenced by perceptions of the potential threat to the researcher’s freedom of research. In contract, secrecy-related concerns do not appear significant, while the desire to acquire additional resources is relevant in choosing the intensity of the collaboration. We explore the implications of these findings for university-industry collaboration.

Abstract
Collaborating with industry constitutes discretionary behaviour for academics: this decision is shaped by the institutional environment and individual perceptions of the potential costs and benefits. Drawing on a large-scale survey of Italian researchers, we find that the decision to collaborate with industry is influenced by perceptions of the potential threat to the researcher’s freedom of research. In contract, secrecy-related concerns do not appear significant, while the desire to acquire additional resources is relevant in choosing the intensity of the collaboration. We explore the implications of these findings for university-industry collaboration.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
