The paper investigates the diversified patterns of outsourcing in the Lombardy region. Based on a large firm-level survey, the work investigates extent, depth, regional embeddedness and degree of internationalisation of outsourcing processes, differentiating production, research and service activities. Fragmentation is remarkably wide and interests all industrial sectors to a similar extent. Outsourcing has a clear regional dimension, concerning highly skilled firms at most, and taking the form of extended producer-driven chains. Offshoring is still a very minor fraction of the deverticalisation process, largely related to wider strategies of internationalisation by foreign group subsidiaries at intermediate stages of the value chain.
