The aim of this paper is to provide a quantitative retrospective of thirty-five years of Regional Science and Urban Economics, from Volume 1 (1971) to Volume 35 (2005). In doing so, the paper follows the intellectual development of the journal through its different editors by comparing their editorial statements with the actual changes in the characteristics of articles they selected for publication. © 2007 Elsevier B.V.
