The economic and political consequences of Eastern Enlargement will therefore have an important impact on both, future Enlargement rounds and the migration policies of the EU vis-à-vis its neighbouring regions. All EU-15 countries were confronted with the option of liberalising worker flows from the New Members States (NMS) by May 1st 2005. The sequence of decisions is very instructive as to the policy spillovers involved by un-coordinated migration policies. Their consequences are, in turn, informative as to the spillovers related to diversion of migration flows from countries closing borders to countries taking a rather liberal stance with respect to workers from the NMS. Finally, it is an interesting case because both the sending and the receiving countries have labour market institutions constraining wage adjustment in case of labour supply shocks.
