Autoguidovie is a company operating in the public transport sector in Italy. Starting in 2010, it was faced with the challenge of introducing a driver performance management system. The need to evaluate workforce performance arose as a consequence of significant changes in the sector, changes which have a radical impact on strategy, organization, and culture. The case was designed to be used in Executive or Master classes dealing with performance management and HR management in general: it can be used to spark a discussion on how to devise a performance appraisal and incentive system that supports realization of a new corporate strategy and a coherent, challenging people strategy in a sector undergoing significant change. Sections A (“Pay and use:” a cultural change and its strategic-organizational implications) and B (System design: from pilot to full implementation) of the case can be used separately or along with section C (From evaluation to incentive), depending on whether discussion is to center only around performance management or also compensation and rewards.
