Studio Libeskind is one of the few internationally recognized architectural firms that have managed to be successful both artistically and economically. This article explores the managerial approach behind this suc- cess, which arises from how the Studio copes with several managerial challenges on a daily basis. First the article explores what these challenges are (creating a high-level symbolic project that is also profitable; pro- jecting the lead architect’s views while incorporating the ideas of clients and other architects; making archi- tecture musical, structured and emotional at the same time; balancing the interplay of innovation and tradition) and how Studio Libeskind manages them. Then it frames these challenges as paradoxes – contradictory yet interrelated elements – and proposes a set of management approaches for accepting and resolving them. These approaches offer inspiration and recommendations for other creative organizations.
