Water has become a precious resource on which the well-being and even the survival of future generations critically depend. Issues relating to water such as quality, quantity, availability, planning and management will have to be seriously tackled now and in the future. Further, issues on water scarcity involve protection of vulnerable water systems, sustainable development of water resources, safeguarding access to water functions and services, and protection against water related hazards such as floods and droughts. As such, managing water resources for the future is very complicated and requires multidisciplinary approaches across various problem solving research tools. SCARCE is a multipurpose project that aims to describe and predict the relevance of global change impacts on water availability, water quality and ecosystem services in Mediterranean river basins of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as their impacts on the human society and economy. This project has assembled a multidisciplinary team of leading scientists in the fields of hydrology, geomorphology, chemistry, ecology, ecotoxicology, economy, engineering and modelling, in an unknown effort in the CONSOLIDER framework
