More and more organizations are claiming their commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The literature has investigated both institutional and stakeholder pressures as antecedents of CSR, while the industry environment has gone comparatively under-looked. In this paper we predict that the likelihood of a firm’s CSR commitment will be negatively associated with industry competition, industry uncertainty, and positively associated with industry munificence. To test our hypotheses we used a sample of US firms over the 2002-2012 period for a total of 4,009 firm-year observations. The results from our analyses mostly support our hypotheses providing a nuanced view of the relevance of industry conditions to CSR commitment.
