The Chapter addresses the need policy makers have of monitoring the innovation process, developing three core issues: i) innovation policies and the use of a sound monitoring system; ii) the relationship between indicators and policy models; and iii) ‘good’ composite indicators as a support in policy design. How to get value from knowledge creation is the new imperative, and policy makers have increased their awareness of a sound monitoring and evaluation system and a reliable and functioning indicator systems: they both contribute in improving the capability of coordination and the effectiveness of strategic planning, implementing and fulfilling competitiveness.
