Abstract

Organization theory provides few meaningful constructs and theories when stable dynamics in the biosphere, in „nature‟, give way to hyper-turbulence and uncertainty. The „social‟ is the domain of organization theory – the „natural‟ is not. This paper seeks to provide the ontological and epistemological underpinnings for constructing the natural as an organizational phenomenon. Building on literatures on organization and the natural environment, debates in sociology on the social construction of nature, we derive interdependence between, mutual constitution of, and ontological asymmetry between the social and the natural to develop the foundation for breaking through and expanding historically entrenched boundaries of organization theory. Linking our field to emerging knowledge from pioneering disciplines in ecology, we explore scale, interdisciplinarity, and ecological management as promising areas for future organizational research
