The aim of the present work is to provide some theoretical reflections and empirical evidence on the role of the State in stimulating knowledge-based entrepreneurship and growth during the Third Industrial Revolution. Section 2 describes some of the essential features of this revolution. Section 3 provides some empirical evidence on the role of the State in the Third Industrial Revolution, with particular reference to the case of ICT and biotech. Section 4 puts forward some theoretical reflections on the role of the State intervention in different technological and organisational contexts, by discussing continuity and change across the Second and Third Industrial Revolution. Section 5 concludes.
