This paper addresses one of the major challenges related to the implementation of the environmental sustainability principles at corporate level: understanding under which conditions firms can realistically target environmental sustainability. Accordingly, we explore two factors that have received marginal attention by environmental management scholars: (1) the evolution of the markets where the firm competes in terms of growth, size and related consumption pattern, and (2) the manageability of the relation between the individual firm and the natural environment. These partially exogenous factors can reduce the effectiveness of the corporate environmental strategy, wiping out the possibility to align with the natural environment cycles and dynamics.
