This paper reviews the macroeconomic and microeconomic literature on conflict and economic performance, underlining some important unanswered questions. It then illustrates the event study methodology, which is emplyed by some of the existing studies on the microeconomics of conflict and that can help in addressing some of the unanswered questions. Finally, it presents two empirical illustrations of the event study literature drawn from my own work, emphasizing the way in which these results highlight weaknesses of the institutional context under study.

Abstract

This paper reviews the macroeconomic and microeconomic literature on conflict and economic performance, underlining some important unanswered questions. It then illustrates the event study methodology, which is emplyed by some of the existing studies on the microeconomics of conflict and that can help in addressing some of the unanswered questions. Finally, it presents two empirical illustrations of the event study literature drawn from my own work, emphasizing the way in which these results highlight weaknesses of the institutional context under study.
