Abstract

This article reviews the main changes in the pension systems in United Kingdom, United States and Sweden, briefly touching upon Italy, to understand the extent to which pension schemes in these countries have been affected by the private fully-funded system implemented in Chile at the beginning of the 1980s to replace the previous pension scheme. Moreover, it investigates whether in the experience of these countries there is any evidence of the benefits attributable to such system, i.e. increased savings and returns, wider coverage and capital market development.
